Family Dental Care- Mouth Guards for safety and for a better life

A mouth guard or a dental guard is a flexible appliance that is worn in recreational and athletic activities to save the teeth from trauma. The dentistry completely supports the use of mouth guards in a variety of sports activities.

Why should one wear a mouth guard?

A mouth guard could avoid serious injuries such as jaw fractures, broken teeth, and cerebral haemorrhage by helping to avoid circumstances where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw. Mouth guards are quite effective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the cheeks and lips, especially for those who wear orthodontic instruments. They might also minimise the severity and incidence of concussions. There are three types of mouth guards:

Stock mouth protectors

Stock mouth protectors are conducted and come ready to wear. They are not quite cheap and can be bought at most sporting goods stores and department stores. However, nothing much cab be done to adjust their fit, they are bulky, make talking and breathing difficult, and they offer little or no protection. Dentists do not suggest their use.

Boil and bite mouth protectors

Boil and bite mouth protectors also could be bought at many good sports stores and could fit better than stock mouth protectors. The “boil and bite” mouth guard is created from thermoplastic material. It is placed in hot water to loosen, then fixed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth using tongue and finger pressure.

Custom-fitted mouth protectors

Custom-fitted mouth protectors are customised according to the person and made in a dental office or a professional laboratory based on the dentist’s instructions. First, the dentist in 60805 will make an impression of the teeth and a mouth guard will then be moulded over the model using a special material. This custom-made mouth guard is quite expensive than the other types, but it offers the most comfort and protection.

Teeth grinding

Teeth grinding and clenching are part of a condition known as bruxism, which is a sleep-related movement disorder that could cause a variety of issues, such as jaw pain, tooth pain, and sore gums. It could also damage the teeth. Wearing a mouth guard while the person’s sleep could help keep the top and bottom teeth separated so they don’t damage each other from the pressure of clenching or grinding.

In most cases, one would want a custom-fitted mouth guard for bruxism. Stock mouth guards are uncomfortable and hard to keep in place, which could make it difficult to sleep. While boil-and-bite mouth guards offer a good fit, they become brittle and weak with long use. If the person is not sure whether they need a mouth guard for bruxism, they can always try a boil-and-bite mouth guard for some nights. If it seems to help, one can discuss with their dentist about getting a custom guard.

Night Guards

Most cases of Bruxism could easily be treated by wearing the best dental night guard while they sleep. They work by putting an obstruction between the teeth. When anyone clench their jaw, the night guard helps to reduce the tension and give cushion to the muscles in the jaw. This cushioning not only helps to prevent jaw and face pain, but also protects the enamel of the teeth. They look quite similar to snoring remedies.

Night guards for Bruxism might be purchased over-the-counter without a prescription, as well as direct from the dentist or from a specialized online retailer. There are many different ways they can be fitted, and the type that will work best for the person depends on their individual needs.
